Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in Washington, DC

Adriana Couto Silva

I am a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst licensed to practice in Washington D.C., Maryland, and New York with over 30 years of experience in the healthcare professions. My approach prioritizes active, empathic listening and the nurturing of a connected therapist-patient relationship. My patients are adults from diverse cultures, gender identities, racial, religious, social, and linguistic backgrounds, including immigrants who struggle with issues related to acculturation, separation from their native country, and transgenerational trauma.

Outside private practice, I stay active with professional mentorship activities and conversations in the field: I am currently a co-chair of the Fellowship Program at the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis (ICP+P) in Washington, DC and recently served as guest editor for a Psychoanalytic Inquiry journal issue titled “Latinx Voices.” In my spare time, I lead a meditation group called Wren Zen.

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis

My therapeutic approach is based on Relational Self Psychology theory and other contemporary psychoanalytic perspectives that explore intersectional areas of gender, culture, ethnicity, race, power and class. My goal is to work with you to build an authentic, emotionally attuned relationship that allows us to safely explore difficult personal problems and address issues such as anxiety, depression, grief, and mourning as well as conflicts in relationships and the sociocultural milieu.

Depending on your needs, you can choose to engage in psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis. Both modalities are based on the same principles. The main difference is intensity: Psychoanalytic psychotherapy sessions are usually scheduled once or twice a week, while psychoanalysis is scheduled three to four times a week. Therapy sessions are offered in person and remotely.

Many of my patients seek therapy to address anxiety, depression, losses, transgerational trauma, relationship struggles, life transitions, parenting, voluntary or involuntary migration, well as identity, social and cultural issues.

Attachment & Secure Relationships

I also work with parents and caregivers who want support understanding their pre-school children’s emotional and relational needs using the Circle of Security Parenting (COS-P) program. During this 8-10 week program, which draws on insights from attachment theory, we will reflect on ways of understanding your children’s emotional needs and how to support their ability to manage feelings, enhancing their self-esteem, and honoring their desire for connection. Ultimately, the goal is to nurture secure, joyous relationships between parents and children. I also collaborate with pre-school teachers to strengthen relationships with students using the Circle of Security for educators.

Insurance & Payment

I am in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield and Cigna until August 2024. I accept major credit cards for payment, including Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Saving Accounts (HSA).
